READ JUDGES 15
GO DEEPER
In chapter 15 of the book of Judges, Samson continues his retaliation against the Philistines by carrying out a series of acts of vengeance. Initially, Samson discovers that his wife's father had given her to marry his best man, leading Samson to feel betrayed. In order to make amends, the father offers Samson his younger daughter as a replacement. Samson then proceeds to destroy the grain fields of the Philistines in verses 3 to 6. In response to this attack, the Philistines retaliate by burning Samson's wife and her father. This tragic event prompts Samson to seek revenge by killing those responsible, and with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, he defeats 1,000 more Philistines using only the jawbone of a donkey in verses 7-8 and 14-16.
Sampson, having defeated a small Philistine army on his own, is now in need of water. This marks the first instance in the chapter where he turns to God for physical sustenance. In response, God grants him water in verse 19, which restores Sampson. Why is this moment noteworthy?
The moment is important because it marks the initial instance of Samson appealing to God. Prior to this, Samson had consistently depended on himself, pursued his course, married outside his community, boasted about his strength and intelligence, and acted on impulses of fury and vengeance. Until now, Samson had not acknowledged God in any way, whether in a spiritual or practical sense. However, at last, Samson attributes his strength and skills to God and seeks help from Him.
Although we may not possess the extraordinary strength of Samson, God has provided each of us with unique gifts to be used in accordance with His divine purpose and for His glory. Many times, we tend to depend on our talents to navigate through life, turning to God only when faced with challenges beyond our control. To prevent this, we should prioritize seeking God's guidance in all our endeavors and yield to His will. By embracing the teachings of Jesus and the blessing of grace, we are empowered to communicate with and honor a heavenly ruler through prayer and worship.
Samson, similar to the other judges in this book, acted independently and experienced significant repercussions for his decisions. Nevertheless, God leveraged Samson's actions to accomplish His purpose and guide the Israelites on a path of return to Him. Let us be mindful that our talents are meant to bring glory to God, not ourselves, and let us strive to utilize them in alignment with God's intentions for our lives. It is always possible to recognize our reliance on God and honor Him, regardless of the timing.
