READ JUDGES 16

GO DEEPER

In the conclusion of the story of Samson in Judges 16, his actions appear incredulous. While the feat of uprooting city gates and carrying them up a hill may seem ludicrous, what is even more astonishing is his willingness to let Delilah betray him. Despite being questioned four times about the source of his strength, he provides her with an answer each time. Initially, this might appear as a harmless jest for Samson as he deceives her on three occasions. However, even when she attempts to weaken him based on his false responses, he remains in the situation. One would assume that after seeing her act upon his lies, he would have the insight to understand that she would do the same when he revealed the truth. What was going through his mind? Why did he not extricate himself from the situation upon realizing Delilah's intentions to harm him?

Perhaps it was due to his sense of entitlement. He had experienced little hardship in his life, and daunting challenges meant little to him. Even facing three thousand warriors seemed insignificant if he possessed the jawbone of a donkey. He had a knack for succeeding in everything he pursued. He had grown accustomed to taking risks without suffering consequences and had become familiar with danger without being harmed. It's possible that he had become addicted to this lifestyle. When confronted with his mortality, he was so convinced of his invincibility that he failed to see it for what it truly was.

We may criticize the foolish waste made by a talented individual, yet do we not exhibit similar behavior in our own lives? Are we not blinded by our entitlement, unable to see the real danger posed by an enemy intent on our destruction? We flirt with danger, gradually building up a tolerance for sin until it consumes us entirely. Catastrophic sins do not manifest overnight; they stem from seemingly insignificant choices that we make, leading us deeper into peril. We rationalize our actions, believing that the potential rewards outweigh the risks, despite our deep-seated awareness that we are treading on dangerous territory. We may have escaped consequences in the past, but we cannot always rely on luck to bail us out.

QUESTIONS

1. In what ways have you limited your options, fueling a potentially risky or covert lifestyle?

2. How have you downplayed the adversary's determination to harm you and your loved ones?

3. If you traced the consequences of your minor concessions to their ultimate outcome, would it lead to a fulfilling life or a ruined one?
