READ JUDGES 3
GO DEEPER
The current chapter illustrates the strength of the Spirit of God through the actions of ordinary individuals who became judges. These judges were elevated by God to impact the nation's direction significantly. Their ability to achieve this was attributed to the presence of the Spirit of the LORD in them, as mentioned in verse 10. Through allowing the Spirit to guide them, these judges performed remarkable deeds. For instance, Shamgar managed to defeat 600 Philistines using a simple oxgoad. An oxgoad is a tool with a pointed and flat end typically used for agricultural purposes. It is not conceivable that a regular person could employ such a tool to kill such a large number of people. However, Shamgar achieved this feat by yielding to the Spirit's guidance. The narrative suggests that with complete surrender to the Spirit's influence, individuals can effectively utilize ordinary tools in ways that bring people closer to Jesus and bring glory to God.
Judges 3 instructs us on the unwavering faithfulness and enduring love of God. We read in verse 7, "And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves." God permitted their conquest and enslavement. The Israelites endured eight years of bondage without turning to God. However, upon their plea to the Lord, they were rescued, and Israel was revived. Despite this restoration, Israel once more neglected God, leading to their defeat and subjugation once again.
After a span of eighteen years, they finally turned to God for help. Once again, God intervened and restored Israel. Israel didn't just make a single mistake but countless mistakes throughout their lifetime. For years, they disregarded God and worshipped idols. Yet, when they were in desperate need and called upon God, He came to their rescue. This pattern showcases God's unwavering love and loyalty. No one is excluded from God's love, as shown by Israel's history of unfaithfulness. Despite Israel's long period of disloyalty, once they acknowledged their mistakes and sought God, He remained faithful. Likewise, regardless of our past actions, God is always ready to forgive us as we see in 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Prayer
1. What is the tool or talent that the Lord could use powerfully in your life?
2. What is needed for you to completely yield to the guidance of the Holy Spirit?
3. Have you ever experienced feelings of being unworthy of love? How can you reassure yourself that despite these feelings, God's love for you is unconditional and infinite?
