READ JUDGES 2
GO DEEPER
Yesterday (Judges 1), the tribes failed to remove the Canaanites from the Promised Land and instead kept them as slaves. This failure had a lasting impact on future generations of God's chosen people. Despite God's covenant with Israel to protect them as long as they remained faithful, disobedience led to the removal of that protection. However, the reassuring message is that God never forsakes His people, offering redemption and forgiveness.
If you have glanced through the Old Testament, it may appear as a repetitive pattern of obedience and disobedience. It can be frustrating to see the constant cycle of people turning away from God and then finding deliverance only to repeat the same mistakes. In this chapter, there are seven instances of rebellion, losing divine protection, experiencing deliverance, living under God's authority and freedom, and then returning to worshipping false gods like Baal. Verse 10 highlights that after Joshua's passing, a new generation emerged that was ignorant of the Lord and unaware of His past deeds for Israel.
The fact that these individuals, who had experienced miraculous deliverance, failed to pass on a love for and devotion to God to the next generation is somewhat perplexing. Even a seemingly minor act of disobedience, such as keeping Canaanites as slaves, resulted in the adoption of Canaanite idols within Israelite society. Worship of these idols, representing fertility, love, and sensuality, led to abhorrent practices like temple prostitution and child sacrifice. It is important to recall that in Exodus 20, when God presented the Ten Commandments to His people, He first reminded them of His identity and past deeds before instructing them not to worship other gods or create idols.
Although the Israelites' sins may appear to be on a different level than what we would commit, the underlying nature of the sin is similar to our own. The idols of the Canaanites were alluring to God's people because they catered to their immediate desires and offered short-term, albeit misguided, benefits. This allowed them to indulge in their desires while still believing they were obedient to a higher power. As a result, they unknowingly led entire generations away from the One who had freed them from slavery. If this concept makes you feel uncomfortable, you are not alone.
It is our duty to show reverence and affection towards God, as well as to educate the younger generation on how to love and follow Him. If we neglect to share the stories of God's goodness with our children, grandchildren, friends, and family, we risk ending up like the people in Judges 2—individuals seeking instant gratification and living without the shelter of their Maker. Let's make a conscious effort to instill a deep love for God, His Son, and His teachings in those under our care today.
