READ 1 SAMUEL 2
GO DEEPER
Hannah's prayer of gratitude exalts the holiness, sovereignty, and might of God. Her initial distress and sorrow have transformed into happiness and faith in the Lord. It must have been challenging for her to part with her son, whom she had long prayed for, and entrust him to Eli. Instead of finding joy in parting with him, she found solace in knowing that she had placed her son in the care of the Supreme Being, who is holy, omnipotent, and all-knowing, counting the stars in the sky and the hairs on Samuel's head.
Next, we meet Eli's sons, who are immoral and deceitful. These men exploit their authority for personal gain and pleasure, showing disrespect and dishonor towards God. Their lives are characterized by disobedience, pride, and disdain. Eli weakly reprimands them, yet they refuse to change their ways. The comparison between Eli's sons and Samuel is purposely stark and striking, contrasting grown men with a young boy. Age does not always correlate with fidelity, maturity, or wisdom. Samuel, a mere child, faithfully serves God amid chaos. The specifics of Samuel's service to the Lord are not provided; what matters is that he faithfully carries it out. Ultimately, God values our devotion over our accomplishments.
Hannah's unwavering trust and dedication to God resulted in heartfelt prayers and incredible commitments. Samuel's obedience and loyalty resulted in God's blessing and the respect of others. Eli's indifference and his son's stubbornness to change led to a father's sorrow, divine punishment, and eventual demise.
We do not subscribe to the idea of a prosperity gospel (believing that doing good for God will lead to receiving favor in return). Instead, we embrace the gospel of Jesus, which offers life regardless of our circumstances. Like Hannah, we discover joy in the Lord, who reigns supreme even amidst chaos and corruption. Similar to Samuel, we are encouraged to remain obedient and faithful despite the actions of others around us. Instead of merely fulfilling religious duties, our focus should be on pursuing Jesus wholeheartedly. Let's reject passivity and pride, and instead persevere in running the race set before us with determination.
