READ 1 SAMUEL 3

GO DEEPER

"Why don't I have the opportunity to hear directly from God?" This may be the question that crosses your mind when reflecting on 1 Samuel 3. Samuel was indeed privileged to receive direct communication from the Lord! Imagine if we could have the same encounter—our faith would surely be as strong as Samuel's! This story may feel distant from our reality, as we desire to hear from God but often struggle to do so. However, in this chapter, we witness a different scenario where God actively seeks to communicate with Samuel, reaching out to him three times. If only God would pursue us with such persistence as well!

While we may envy God's communication with Samuel, it is important to recognize that in this narrative, the Holy Spirit is addressing us. The story reveals the kind of person God chooses to speak to. Samuel is able to hear God because he is attentive and his life is peaceful enough to allow God to capture his focus. Whenever God speaks, Samuel listens. Conversely, our lives are filled with so much chaos that we may be missing God's attempts to connect with us. We are too preoccupied with the rush of daily life to make time for Him in the morning, or we drown out His voice with the constant background noise of television. Our lives are too noisy for us to listen to God.

In this chapter, a key point highlighted is the shift in communication. The interaction transitioned from God conversing with Eli to God communicating with Samuel. This transition would have likely been difficult for Eli, especially considering the message delivered to Samuel. The significance of this shift is that God desires to communicate with individuals who are willing to heed His instructions. Samuel is portrayed as a receptive and compliant individual, ready to carry out God's will. Conversely, communication was severed between God and Eli due to his defiance. To receive divine guidance, we must cultivate a disposition of availability and obedience. Let us emulate Samuel's openness by approaching God with the words, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
