READ 1 SAMUEL 9

GO DEEPER

If someone were to inquire about how you would portray yourself, what would be your response? Will you begin by mentioning your age, gender, profession, education, or marital status? Would you incorporate descriptive words that highlight your key traits? Perhaps you might also mention your enneagram type or skin tone. The ways in which we characterize or identify ourselves vary among individuals.

In 1 Samuel 9, we learn about the portrayal of two individuals (Saul and Samuel). Saul, who was the son of Kish, ". . . a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people." (1 Samuel 9:2).  Saul is set to rescue the Israelites from the Philistines, while Samuel is recognized as the "man of God." One is identified by his appearance, while the other is characterized by his connection with the Lord.

We will soon witness how Saul's personal flaws contribute to his downfall. His arrogance, lack of patience, and ungodly behavior result in his failure as the initial king of Israel. God decides to replace Saul with a man who is more aligned with His values to guide His people (1 Samuel 13:14).

What follows your name? Do you identify yourself based on a physical trait, occupation, or personality? As believers in Christ, we desire to be recognized as God's children, individuals who are characterized by our connection with the Lord and the positive impact we make. While there are occasional displays of excellence in Saul, he is more than just a man who is tall, dark, and attractive. However, his accomplishments are short-lived, and his reputation in the long run is not honorable or commendable. Let us strive to be like Samuel, remembered for our strong bond with the Lord.

1. If someone asked you to describe yourself briefly, would you focus on your physical traits or on your spiritual connection?

2. What positive traits do we observe in Saul in this passage?

3. How would you want people to remember your character and reputation? What actions can you take today to work towards that ideal legacy?
