READ 1 SAMUEL 10

GO DEEPER

In 1 Samuel 10, the chapter begins with Samuel secretly anointing Saul as the inaugural King of Israel. Samuel then explains to Saul three distinct signs that will validate his status as the chosen one of the Lord. Verses 2-6 elaborate on these specific signs that God provided to confirm His plan for Saul. God unmistakably affirmed Saul's mission through the discovery of the lost donkeys, meeting the three men on their way to Bethel, and encountering the prophets.

God transformed Saul's heart in a more significant way. This is stated in verse 9, ". . . when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day."  Saul was an ordinary person, yet God chose him, consecrated him, and transformed his character in order to equip him for guiding the nation of Israel.

In Ezekiel 11:19-20, a comparable narrative unfolds as God speaks to the Israelites and offers them a pledge. "And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God."  The verse also demonstrates the incredible authority of God manifested through the Holy Spirit, who has the ability to shift our attention from sin to God.

God's work is accomplished, not through human strength or power, but by the divine Spirit (Zechariah 4:6). God gave Saul a new heart, turning him from insignificance to the King of Israel. This inner change led to a complete transformation of his external appearance, behavior, and perspective, so much so that even his closest friends and family failed to recognize him (verses 11-13). When we strive to align our hearts with God's, we should bear in mind that our own transformations come through His power and not our own efforts. By praying for God's transformative work in our lives, we aim for our appearance, conduct, and mindset to resemble Jesus rather than our former selves.

QUESTIONS

1. Can you define transformation as undergoing a change in form, appearance, or character? Is your heart open to being changed by the Holy Spirit?

2. Are you willing to trust in God's guidance and strength, even if you feel inadequate for the tasks He has assigned you?

3. Which parts of your old or stubborn heart are you struggling to release? Confess these to God and seek His assistance in letting go of them.
