READ 1 SAMUEL 19
GO DEEPER
Based on the readings from yesterday and today, it is evident that Saul has been consumed by jealousy and anger towards David's achievements, although they were intended to benefit Saul's kingdom. This envy and wrath drove Saul to attempt to personally harm David and also instruct his followers, servants, and son to eliminate David.
However, God's plan cannot be stopped. According to the Bible, God intended to use David for His glory. It is important to note that God also made a plan to ensure David's safety and place him among the right people. David was supported by an unexpected ally in Jonathan, the king's son, who sacrificed his life and birthright to protect David. Scripture shows that David's wife Michal and Saul's daughter also shielded David from the envious king. Lastly, David was also safeguarded by Samuel, his loyal friend of many years.
God used his followers to provide for David. Fortunately, he is capable of doing the same for us. Reflect on moments when you received a timely phone call or note, or when a friend appeared at your doorstep when you needed them most. It could also be a type of support you didn't know about, like a friend defending your reputation in your absence.
Without a doubt, it should be clear that life was not smooth or flawless for David. He faced challenges like evading a spear numerous times and being in constant danger. Psalm 59 depicts David's mental state as he attempted to flee on that crucial night: David experienced fear and desperation and earnestly pleaded with God for protection. And how did God provide that protection? God primarily provided this protection through His followers.
We all desire to have a friend like Jonathan, but there are times when we must embody Jonathan's qualities ourselves. Jonathan's dedication to his friend led him to relinquish his claim to the throne and the privileges that came with it. Are we prepared to make similar sacrifices to be instruments of God? God intends for us, His followers, to support one another. Whether we are in need of a friend or are called to be one, let us seek guidance from God today to understand our role in His purpose and demonstrate the courage and readiness to fulfill it.
