READ 2 SAMUEL 20
GO DEEPER
Today's reading illustrates the severe consequences of sin. Absalom's sin of raping the ten concubines resulted in them being considered "defiled" under Old Testament law, thus making them ineligible for marriage to anyone else. Due to someone's sin against them, they had to live as widows in seclusion for the rest of their lives, despite David's efforts. Joab, out of jealousy for Amasa's position in David's army, betrayed and ultimately murdered him in a brutal manner. Additionally, Sheba's uprising led to his demise. Sin begets more sin, creating a chain reaction that ultimately results in death. As Romans 6:23 states, "the wages of sin is death."
Nevertheless, we witness the outcomes of sin juxtaposed with the outcomes of wisdom. The unnamed woman who plays a pivotal role in saving the city of Abel does not have her name, complete narrative, or lineage documented in the Bible. Despite being only briefly mentioned in eight verses, she is lauded for her wisdom. Joab and his troops heeded the sound counsel she fearlessly offered. Her sagacity resulted in the rescue of an entire city!
Sin leads to death, while wisdom leads to salvation. Psalm 14:1 states, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, their deeds are vile." Fools behave as if they are their gods, disregarding the existence of a higher power. Characters such as Absalom, Joab, Sheba, and occasionally David exemplify this prideful behavior, ultimately leading to their demise. On the contrary, the wise acknowledge their limitations and submit humbly to God's guidance. This wisdom not only ensures their own salvation but also serves as a means for God to bring salvation to others, as seen in the story referenced.
How about ourselves? Perhaps we claim to have faith in God, but are we truly embracing it in our daily lives? Are we willingly surrendering to God's guidance in every aspect of our lives? Or, are we essentially denying the existence of God through our actions? "He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered." (Proverbs 28:26). Let's take a moment to remember that following the path of foolishness leads to destruction, while wisdom leads to a fulfilling life.
