READ 2 SAMUEL 8
GO DEEPER
In this section of 2 Samuel, we witness the start of the realization of God's covenant promise of peace to David (2 Samuel 7:11). For over 125 years, the Israelites had been fighting against their adversaries, including the Philistines. This prolonged period of strife had been a consequence of their lack of loyalty to God (Judges 2). One key message to take away from this chapter is the significance of our obedience and loyalty to God.
When we come across a recurring theme in our study of the Bible, it is important to take note. Both verses 6 and 14 emphasize this point that the Lord gave David victory wherever he went. As mentioned before, it is emphasized that the LORD is the one responsible for these triumphs, not David. Nevertheless, David humbly obeyed and served God, enabling Him to achieve His desired outcome for Israel, which is peace. Although our struggles and successes may differ, and we might not always see positive outcomes, surrendering all situations to God in prayer, as stated in Philippians 4, will bring forth His peace to protect us. By faithfully submitting to Him, we open the way for Him to act within us and through us.
In this chapter, the second point highlighted is the way David governed his people, which is described in verse 15. He ruled with justice and righteousness, but he didn't do it alone, unlike Saul in previous chapters. David's dedicated service to his people involved a team supporting him. Recognizing our dependence on God leads us to acknowledge our need for others. 1 Corinthians 12 discusses how we all have diverse gifts intended to collaborate in building up the community. We rely on each other in both times of conflict and fulfilling God's mission. Let us strive to be a generation that humbly surrenders to God and collaborates to fulfill His purpose in us, transforming the world through His people, for His glory.
