READ 2 SAMUEL 9
GO DEEPER
In today's passage, we witness God's benevolence expressed through David. David requests the presence of any surviving relatives of Saul. The only individual remaining is Mephibosheth, Jonathan's disabled son. Mephibosheth, who was unable to walk, had been in seclusion since David assumed the throne. Mephibosheth was fearful because he assumed that David would have him killed upon discovering his existence, which was a common practice at the time due to his lineage. However, David demonstrates compassion by not only granting Mephibosheth his rightful possessions of land and servants but also welcoming him to dine at his table as though he were his son.
David's compassion towards Mephibosheth reflects the love that God has for us. Mephibosheth, who was disabled and living in fear, was transformed by David's generosity. David gave Mephibosheth land, servants, and a place at the king's table despite his lack of merit. This act mirrors the unconditional love that God has for us, as David's actions toward Mephibosheth were a reflection of God's love for him.
God extends the same type of kindness towards us as well. Regardless of whether we are hiding from Him or feeling unworthy or unqualified, God accepts us as we are and welcomes us into His family. He grants us a place at His table and an inheritance, despite our inability to contribute anything to Him. Even though we bring nothing to the table, He provides us with everything we require abundantly. But why does He show such lavish grace to those who may reject or flee from Him? The reason is simple—because He is kind and loves us.
The Bible teaches us that God's kindness is what encourages us to change our ways (Romans 2:4). He shows us kindness because He desires for us to be in close fellowship with Him.
Prayer
1. In what ways has God demonstrated His benevolence towards you? Give thanks for everything He has accomplished in and through you.
2. In the manner of David, how have you displayed God's kindness to others?
3. Consider the individuals you will encounter today. How can you exhibit God's abundant kindness, mercy, and grace towards them? Now, take action!
