READ 1 SAMUEL 30
GO DEEPER
Coming back home after a prolonged absence is always comforting. Home signifies security and love. But picture this: David's experience today was the complete opposite. When David arrived back home, he found it in ruins, everything consumed by fire. Nothing remained of his loved ones and belongings. The sheer helplessness and sorrow he felt must have been overwhelming. It is understandable that upon his return to Ziklag, David and his companions cried uncontrollably until they were physically drained of tears.
Once we had exhausted all our tears, what would have been our next course of action? Contact authorities? Seek assistance from neighbors? Express frustration and question God? However, in the account we read today, David turned to God. He understood that he could only acquire strength through God (1 Samuel 30:6). Amid his hopelessness, David trusted in God's unwavering presence. Drawing strength from the Lord, David consulted the priest Abiathar and utilized the ephod (a sacred garment worn by priests) to seek guidance from the Lord, who responded. Similarly, we possess the ability to communicate with our Lord and Savior. Because of Jesus' sacrifice on our behalf, we do not need to approach a priest for assistance. Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we can call upon God in times of suffering, pain, and despair (Psalm 145:18-20, Romans 10:13).
God granted David complete success, enabling him to recover all that the Amalekites had lost. David's trust in the Lord resulted in another manifestation of God's kindness and compassion. By choosing to distribute the recovered goods to all his soldiers, even those who did not fight, David exemplified the virtue of generosity. This instance serves as a reminder that everything we possess ultimately belongs to God, who provides abundantly beyond our requirements. His grace and mercy equip us to overcome the challenges we encounter.
