READ 1 SAMUEL 29
GO DEEPER
To remind ourselves, David has spent the last year residing in Gath, a Philistine town, in order to escape from Saul, who remains intent on taking his life. During this time, David has gained the confidence and approval of Achish, the ruler of Gath.
Chapter 29 sees the Philistines uniting to wage war against Israel, with David preparing to join them in the battle. Achish supports David, but the leaders of other Philistine cities hesitate and refuse his help, fearing that he may betray them to side with his own people. The narrative does not clarify why David offers to ally with the Philistines against Israel. It is known that David had already deceived Achish, raising the possibility that he might have used this chance to turn against the Philistines instead of the Israelites. Alternatively, he may have genuinely lost his way and been willing to fight alongside the Philistines. What remains evident is that God utilizes Israel's enemies to safeguard the future King of Israel from his own potential downfall. If David had fought against the Israelites, it would have likely prevented him from ascending to the throne. This rejection served as God's protective intervention for David.
David and his soldiers are instructed to return to Ziklag, where they discover that it has been raided. In the upcoming chapters, we will see how God works through David during this ordeal. This chapter teaches that, in His supreme authority, God can use even our adversaries to achieve His purpose for us. In this case, He utilizes the adversities faced by David for his ultimate safeguarding, illustrating that He can also do the same through the adversities, grievances, disillusionments, and rejections in our lives. Romans 8:28 serves as a reminder of this: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose."
