READ 1 SAMUEL 22
GO DEEPER
Some individuals are in leadership roles, while others take on a more supportive role. The message in today's chapter is meant for both categories, emphasizing the loyalty and dedication shown by the followers.
At the start of this chapter, David is fleeing from Saul and finds sanctuary in a cave. David's family and numerous others, many grappling with hardships, debts, or dissatisfaction, join him (v. 2). They come to David seeking solace and direction. They choose to support and follow him not because he is a flawless leader, but because they believe God is guiding him. Despite David's imperfections, God is working through him. Followers of God should not anticipate flawless leaders, as they do not exist. Many, like David, possess significant shortcomings and commit sinful acts. This attitude does not mean followers should overlook discernment or disregard sin. However, it does imply that followers should assess leaders based on more than just their past mistakes. The followers in the current chapter exemplify this mindset.
Saul's employees are facing difficulties as well. Despite being under Saul's authority, they acknowledge that ultimately they are accountable to God. Their reverence for God surpasses their fear of Saul, leading them to support and assist David. Saul is furious. Despite the pressure they face from Saul, his servants remain loyal to God. They understand that God is in charge and has a plan. What else can God's followers learn from this? True followers keep in mind God's assurances even during tough times. They recognize that when their earthly leader (or any superior) prohibits what God commands or commands what God prohibits, they are not obligated to obey their leader's directives.
God utilizes individuals who follow Him as a component of His divine strategy. Devoted followers yield to God and His strategy. God operates through those designated to lead, yet He also summons others to rise up alongside them and back those individuals. Supporters uphold the leaders appointed by God, irrespective of any imperfections or challenges that may arise. By submitting to God, we discover our power and strength. Pursuing our desires reveals our vulnerabilities and weaknesses.
