GO DEEPER
In 1 Samuel 23, we see Saul continuously chasing after David, who, despite his good deeds for the city of Keilah, faces adversity. This particular time in David's life resonates with many, as it speaks to the common experience of being faithfully committed to God while still encountering challenges. Being faithful and encountering hardships can coexist in a believer's journey. Following God does not always guarantee safety or ease.
In this text, David demonstrates how to navigate a tumultuous and bewildering period by selectively tuning into certain voices that guide our thoughts and emotions. Throughout this chapter, David consistently seeks guidance from and listens to the Lord. It appears that in every situation and choice he faces, David prioritizes listening to God's voice. When he does seek input from those around him, he surrounds himself with individuals like Jonathan who uplift him by recalling the teachings and assurances of the Lord.
On the other hand, Saul surrounds himself with individuals who only agree with him, supporting his aggressive and ungodly actions by satisfying his desires and affirming his beliefs. These are the individuals Saul has specifically chosen to have around him. In recent chapters, we observe a man who is determined to uphold his beliefs in pride, entitlement, and authority to the extent that he eliminates anyone who challenges his decisions, goes against his worship of idols, or offers him honest advice.
We must assume responsibility for the community we build and place ourselves in the company of individuals who guide us towards Christ. We must consistently opt for humility and remain receptive to challenging or uncomfortable situations, even as we follow God's instructions. In times of trouble, our loyal companions will offer Christ-centered wisdom, support, and motivation to uplift our tired spirits.
Though loyal friends are invaluable, we must also prioritize our initial love for God and the habits that keep us close to Him and His teachings. In times of crisis, David instinctively seeks guidance from God. To be ready for challenges, we must seek God's wisdom in all situations before they arise.
QUESTIONS
1. Consider the individuals in your life who are willing to provide candid feedback. Identify the loyal friends who help guide you towards God. Take time today to show appreciation for them.
2. Reflect on the type of friend you are. Are you more like Jonathan, who was true and honorable, or do you tend to conform to the views of others like Saul's followers? Make a commitment to direct your friends towards God's love and guidance, even if it involves delivering difficult truths.
3. What message is the Lord conveying to you today through His teachings? Dedicate 5-10 minutes to sit quietly with God. Embrace the practice of being in His presence, contemplating His Word, and listening for His guidance.
