READ 1 SAMUEL 28

GO DEEPER

The chapter of 1 Samuel 28 is indeed intriguing. At this point, Samuel has passed away, and King Saul seeks to eliminate mediums and spiritists from the land while also gathering Israel to confront the Philistines in battle.

Prior to engaging in battle with the Philistines, Saul seeks guidance from the Lord. Despite receiving no response through conventional means of that era (v. 6), Saul opts to handle the situation himself. He turns to a medium, a person who professes to connect the living with the deceased. Saul uncovers a female medium in Endor with the help of one of his servants, disguises himself, and visits her under the cover of darkness. Eager to keep the visit discreet due to his prohibition of mediums in the land, Saul takes precautions to avoid detection.

In a surprising turn of events, God utilizes a method to bring forth the departed spirit of the prophet Samuel. The spirit of Samuel reproaches Saul, warning him of the repercussions of his transgressions and defiance towards the Lord. Furthermore, the spirit predicts that the Philistines will defeat Israel, leading to the demise of Saul and his sons.

It is crucial for us to recall that we should avoid resorting to sinful behavior during times of desperation. Saul attributed his sin to God (verse 15) and mentioned turning to mediums because he felt abandoned by the Lord. It is important for us to heed and take note when we receive guidance from the Lord through His scripture, His Spirit, and His followers. Saul had previously disregarded God's clear guidance on multiple occasions (as seen in 1 Samuel 13 and 15), resulting in the Lord not answering Saul's pleas for assistance. Let us be individuals who embrace God's guidance.
