READ 2 SAMUEL 22
GO DEEPER
In 2 Samuel 22, a key idea is the truth that our salvation is solely dependent on God and not on our efforts. Therefore, if only God has the power to save us, what is David trying to convey in verses 23-24? "For all His judgments were before me: and as for His statutes, I did not depart from them. I was also upright before Him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity." David does not brag about being flawless, but acknowledges the process of sanctification through God.
As we submit to God and let Him 'lighten our darkness' (v. 29), He initiates a change in our lives. 'He trains our hands…' (v. 35), and 'through Him we are able to move forward…' (v. 30). David was empowered by God to live a pure and just life. David emphasizes that living righteously leads to rewards, while wickedness brings about consequences—our actions have real outcomes. God is fair and will not overlook wrongdoing and unfairness but will bring about His judgment.
Understanding the righteousness of God should evoke both joy and fear within us. We experience joy when we believe that God will rectify all the injustices in the world. However, we should also feel a sense of fear as we acknowledge our transgressions that merit God's judgment. Nevertheless, the good news of the gospel offers hope in this regard. Upon closer examination, we see that David's worship serves as a direct pathway to the gospel.
All of us are surrounded and condemned by our own sinful natures (v. 5-6). However, when we cry out to God for salvation, He listens to us (v. 7) and out of His immense kindness and love, He opens up the heavens and delivers us from our judgment (v. 8-19). Upon embracing God's guidance, He leads us to a secure place where we can walk in righteousness and encounter His mercy (v. 21-31). By submitting to God's authority, He educates us and equips us to battle for Him in our family, community, and the world (v. 32-40). Ultimately, when aligned with God, we are aligned with the victorious side of history and will know triumph (vv. 41-46)! We can receive His deliverance, defense, training, and righteousness, not because of our deeds, but due to God's remarkable love for us.
The message of the gospel transforms every aspect of life.
