2 Samuel 23

READ 2 SAMUEL 23

GO DEEPER

As the book of 2 Samuel draws to a close, the Spirit of God speaks through David. God emphasizes to David the rewards that accompany his rule when guided by fear for God. Despite his flaws as a king, David consistently sought to please God in all aspects of his life. Whether we consider the Psalms, see David seeking forgiveness for his sins, or observe his deep faith in God, it is evident that David prioritized his relationship with God above all else.

1 Samuel 13:14 describes David, the future king, as aligned with God's will. During his rule, David consistently sought God's guidance and wisdom. Whenever David obediently followed God's instructions, he and his people received divine blessings. If David made mistakes and dishonored God, he would repent and ask for forgiveness. David was not regarded as a man after God's heart because he was flawless, but rather because he upheld his faith and surrendered to God's plans. Additionally, David demonstrated humility and worshipped God, refusing to take credit for his successes as king and acknowledging God's role in establishing an eternal covenant with him and rescuing him.

David's relationship with God serves as a lesson on how we can strive to have a heart like God's. Just like David, we can choose to obediently follow God's will with humility. Even during difficult times, we can choose to worship God. When we make mistakes, we can repent and surrender to God. We can also maintain our strong faith in the Almighty God. This is in line with the guidance from Micah 6:8, "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

Just like the covenant God made with David, He has also established an eternal agreement with us. Through the New Covenant, our salvation is secured forever when we have faith in Jesus Christ as our resurrected Lord and Redeemer. When we confess and submit to God's will, we are granted complete forgiveness for our transgressions. By opting to live in a manner that respects and satisfies the Lord, we can rejoice in the abundance that God cultivates within us. It is our hope that, similar to David, we prioritize God above all else.
