READ JOSHUA 3

GO DEEPER

The chapter concludes with a well-known event: the Israelites crossing through a divided sea on dry land. The scene brings to mind the story in Exodus 14 where God splits the Red Sea, although in this instance, the Israelites are not fleeing from pursuers. Instead, they are continuing their journey toward the promised land that God had pledged to them many years before. The Israelites must have felt relief and reflection as they thought about their experiences.

If we solely concentrate on the conclusion of this chapter, we would overlook a significant aspect. In verse 5, Joshua issues a thought-provoking directive to the Israelites. ". . . Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you." Sanctify is not a commonly used term. To sanctify means to fully commit oneself to a specific purpose (in this instance, to God). Joshua understood that the upcoming events were of spiritual significance. They could not casually enter the Promised Land; that would be overlooking the importance of the situation. Their first step was to confirm their total and unconditional surrender to God.

God continuously works within people, as seen throughout the scriptures. However, we cannot live in unrepentant sin, indulging in selfish desires, and still expect God to use us for His Kingdom. It is crucial to daily eliminate sin, squash our selfish ambitions, and dedicate ourselves to the Lord in anticipation of His remarkable work through us. Drawing from 2 Timothy 2:20-21, we are likened to vessels awaiting the Master's use, provided that we purify ourselves from anything dishonorable.              +
