READ JUDGES 1
GO DEEPER
The start of the Book of Judges picks up from where the Book of Joshua ends, following the death of Joshua. With Israel now leaderless, they were previously given instructions by Joshua before his passing. He directed the Israelites to expel any residents from their lands, and they reaffirmed their commitment to God by pledging to abandon other deities and to worship and obey Yahweh exclusively. However, as we will discover in the Book of Judges, their adherence to this plan did not go as smoothly as hoped.
Their attempt to remove the Canaanites began well, with Judah successfully defeating their enemies as expected. However, after a few initial victories, they faced a setback when they encountered iron chariots, which they were not prepared for. It was not just a matter of being outmatched in terms of military strength, though. Throughout Israel's history, God had shown that as long as they had faith in Him, they would prevail regardless of the circumstances. Unfortunately, their lack of trust led to incomplete obedience, causing them to lose their confidence and settle for less than what God had instructed. As a result, tribe after tribe failed to fulfill their duties from that point on.
By not completely driving out the Canaanites from their territory, the Israelites allowed themselves to be influenced by the ways of the Canaanites instead of following Yahweh. When we give Satan a foothold or tolerate sin (even in small measures), we are giving it an opportunity to take control of our lives. In the subsequent chapter of Judges, we will witness the repercussions of Israel's defiance. What applied to them remains relevant to us today: sin always carries consequences. Disobedience, partial obedience, and even delayed obedience all fall short of the total obedience that God expects of us. While the content of this chapter (and the rest of Judges) may seem weighty at times, it also functions as a cautionary message for us to heed as we strive to fully embrace the task God has assigned to us.
