READ JOSHUA 11
GO DEEPER
Upon initial inspection, this chapter appears to be unjust. It seems unfair for Joshua, who, in his adherence to God, discovers himself surrounded by a vast multitude of adversaries. The slaying and expulsion of the Canaanites from their territory also appear unjust. They were the initial occupants! In Genesis 15, God mentioned the Amorites in his covenant with Abraham. The Lord stated that their iniquities are not yet complete. (Genesis 15:16). Despite having ample time to repent from their transgressions, they instead became increasingly depraved. It is evident that God demonstrates patience towards humanity, as stated in 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." God gave them an opportunity to repent, but they chose to continue in their sinful ways.
Instead of looking at others for comparison or pondering over the fairness of our situation, we can embrace the reality that things are not always fair. We can appreciate that God is not just fair, as he spares us from deserved punishment and blesses us abundantly beyond our prayers and expectations.
Joshua faced a decision, just as we do. We can either focus on our circumstances and grumble, or we can look at others' situations and deem them unjust. Alternatively, we can turn to God, believing that He is in control and working everything for our good (see Romans 8:28). Trusting in God's sovereignty can bring us peace. Our lives can reflect God's greatness in all things. When we overcome a challenge in our lives, we can credit God. When we endure difficulties with fortitude, we can give credit to God. Reflecting on the negative patterns in our lives that have been replaced with peace allows us to give praise to God. Like Joshua, we don't need the weapons of our adversaries. We can face challenges with courage and strength, drawing inspiration from God's guidance.
